Councils are bogged down by ‘chaotic and unworkable' legislation, leaving thousands of children with jobs at risk. The Liberal Democrats said the laws covering children having jobs outside schools were stopping some from working at all, and called on the Government to clarify legislation covering children in employment. Lib Dem children spokeswoman, Annette Brooke, said: ‘While some councils are ignoring the law, others are enforcing it too strictly, stopping children from taking perfectly sensible jobs. It is ridiculous that laws from the 1930s are stopping young people enjoying the benefits of working outside school.'
