Leaders of England's core cities have signed a pledge to tackle climate change, including reducing carbon emissions. The leaders represent cities whose total population adds up to 16m, producing 30% of England's carbon emissions. The agreement was signed with Hazel Blears and environment minister Joan Ruddock at the Nottingham conference. A DEFRA grant of £250,000 for three of the core cities, Manchester, Bristol and Leeds, will help development on low carbon projects. The Government's chief scientific adviser Sir David King told the conference 80% of the world's population lived in cities which were responsible for using 75% of the earth's resources and creating 75% of its waste.
