Councils have hit out at the Audit Commission over its Comprehensive Performance Assessments, which were revealed last week. Two councils accused of ‘coasting' by the commission, have claimed the results had failed to take account of the ‘direction of travel' statements. Writing in The MJ this week, Swindon Council chief executive, Gavin Jones, said: ‘Last year, Swindon was the 16th fastest-improving council in the country, and fully deserving of its "improving strongly" direction of travel statement.' Staffordshire CC leader, Cllr John Taylor, said it was ‘disappointing' the commission was ‘incapable of joining together' star ratings and direction of travel.
