Incinerators converting waste into energy will play a 'big part' in reducing landfill, says the chairman of the Audit Commission. The commission's report, Well disposed: responding to the waste challenge' is urging councils to build incinerators or biological and anaerobic treatment plants to dispose of waste before 2013, when the European Union Landfill Directive target comes into force. The new EU targets require the UK to reduce the amount of waste landfilled by 75%, 50% and 35 % of its 1995 level by 2010, 2013 and 2020 respectively. Chairman of the Audit Commission, Michael O'Higgins, said: ‘Incineration is preferable technology. It deals with the most waste and produces most energy. We don't have much choice. But we must keep up the pressure to reduce, reuse and recycle.'
