The European Commission has voiced concerns over the UK Data Protection Act and claimed both local and central government are ‘failing to properly safeguard individuals' personal data'. This investigation has been ongoing for three years, but the EC's threat of legal action and its concerns came to light after a Freedom of Information request. It comes in the week a new law came into force compelling phone companies to retain information about all landline and mobile phone calls, and make the data available to more than 700 official organisations, including local authorities.
