Councils could cut costs by 20% by opening up public service monopolies to competition, according to a new survey by the Serco Institute. The Competitive Edge study looks at the financial savings achieved in five sectors, including local government, when monopolies are exposed to competition. ‘Competition brings new ideas, new ways of working and better ways of managing people, and our analysis shows that brings significant financial savings,' explained institute executive director, Gary Sturgess.
