North East Lincolnshire Council has launched plans to change its name to Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes BC. The council has agreed to launch a consultation exercise on the plans to change the authority's name. A report by chief executive, George Krawiec, said very few people outside the area knew where north east Lincolnshire was, and the name did not engender civic pride. Mr Krawiec said it would be important to incorporate the names of Grimsby and Cleethorpes. He estimated that it would cost £100,000 to change council livery and signage, which could be carried out on an incremental basis to spread the burden. ‘We feel residents and businesses have struggled with the North East Lincolnshire title from day one,' said council leader, Andrew De Freitas. ‘This proposal would help the area shape a clearer identity for itself in the 21st century. ‘People who live in this area will be aware that Great Grimsby was one of the oldest county boroughs with a charter granted in 1201, and I think it is important that the name of our area reflects this heritage.'
