The Government has admitted giving the wrong council £2M of LABGI money by mistake, and is now trying to get it back. The Department for Communities and Local Government gave Newcastle-under-Lyme BC the cash, when it reportedly should have gone to Newcastle City Council instead. Kelvin Turner, executive director for resources and support services at Newcastle-under-Lyme BC, said it had received a letter from the DCLG stating the council had been given £2m which should have gone to another authority instead. But Mr Turner said the council had received the money ‘in good faith', and had already spent or committed to spend the cash on regenerating the town centre. He said ‘wheels were now in motion', and the council would be speaking to the CLG to look at what options were available. Mr Turner said the council had also contacted the LGA for advice. ‘This is a regrettable error and we have taken action to rectify it,' said a DCLG spokesman. ‘We are working closely with the councils involved, and are taking steps to ensure this does not happen again.'
