Council culture: Why digital needs to be at the core

Digital can’t be the responsibility of just one team, and instead of being treated as a technical add-on it must instead be central to how a council operates, writes Cate McLaurin.

Every day, local councils face growing pressure to deliver more with less. But the councils that thrive aren't necessarily those with the biggest budgets, they're the ones that put digital at the heart of how they work.

All public services are digital services. That doesn't mean they're all accessed online, though that's often the starting point, but that digital powers how services are delivered. Even the most human-centred, relational services, like social work or housing, rely on systems and technology to function.
