Cornwall Council has moved into the quarrying business to save jobs and money. The council this week celebrated the opening of the 100 tonne per hour macadam plant at Ludgvan, near Penzance, bought in November last year. All 12 jobs have been secured, and the purchase will ensure continuity of supply. The council's highways service currently buys more than 100,000 tonnes of bituminous materials every year. Robin Fisher, Cornwall Council's highways business manager, said: ‘This is an excellent purchase for the authority which not only secures employment for local people but enables us to enter the coated stone supply market at a very reasonable entry point.'
