Council fined £90k for data breach

The Information Commissioner's Office has fined Telford and Wrekin Council £90,000 for two serious data breaches.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has fined Telford and Wrekin Council £90,000 for two serious data breaches involving the sensitive personal data of vulnerable children.

In the first incident, which occurred on 31 March 2011, a member of the council's safeguarding services sent an assessment of a child – containing sensitive details of the child's behaviour – to the child's sibling instead of its mother. In the second breach, which took place within two months of the first, a mother was given a printout containing the names and addresses of two of her young children's foster parents, forcing the council to find alternative foster care placements.
