Council websites are more accessible to disabled people than private sector's giants Tesco and easyJet, the Society of Information Technology Management has found. The SOCITM research, supported by two ‘mystery shopping' e-mail tests, found council websites could be navigated more easily by people with a sight disability. With a growing number of ‘silver surfers' using the web, and ministers encouraging councils to provide more services online, accessibility is becoming an increasingly-important issue. The research found more than three-quarters of local authority websites (79%) had a link on their home page to an accessibility statement than private sector websites (44%).
