David Buckle is the latest chief executive to run two councils. Previously chief executive at South Oxfordshire DC, Mr Buckle will now oversee proceedings at Vale of White Horse DC as well. A joint panel of councillors voted for Mr Buckle to take on the job over Terry Stock, chief executive at Vale of White Horse DC, who was also in the running. The move is expected to save the council around £750,000 a year by seeing the current 21 senior jobs across both councils reduced to 12. Mr Buckle said: ‘I'm looking forward to getting started with the job and meeting the staff and councillors I've not yet had the pleasure of working with. I know Terry will relish the opportunity to think about his next challenge and I wish him luck in whatever he decides to do.' Stakeholders and external recruitment consultants were brought in to inform the decision. The first job for the new chief executive will be to propose a management structure for the next two tiers of senior officers. Like the chief executive appointment, these will be ring-fenced to the existing staff. Mr Buckle will start his new role on 17 September. Elsewhere, chief executives are hanging up their hats. John Sunderland, chief executive of North Devon DC, is to retire in the autumn, after six years in the driving seat. He joined the council in 1990, and oversaw it's improved CPA rating from ‘weak' to ‘excellent'.
