Job cuts to save cash are already being made by councils in preparation for the tough economic times ahead, according to new research. Half of local government departments are already planning to reduce headcount, and 35% are delaying major projects ahead of public spending curbs. The majority of managers told a KPMG study they were already using efficiency programmes and reducing procurement costs. But, when it comes to redundancies, another study found 95% of public sector workers were more altruistic and prepared to be flexible. Half told the Keep Britain Working survey they would be prepared to accept short-time working, but warned they would challenge managers who demanded sacrifices without making any themselves. And research from the Chartered Institute of Management found senior public sector staff were optimistic about the UK recovery. Chief economist, Lord John Eatwell, said: ‘The positive "can do" approach of British managers should be cherished. Despite the gloom, managers' long-term outlook remains optimistic.'
