Councils have hit back at claims they use revenue from parking to make a profit. A report by the RAC said local authorities made £565m between them from parking in 2011/12. Councils have not denied that they do end up with a surplus but insist the money is ploughed back into paying for parking services. Authorities also pointed out they took supply and demand into account when fixing parking charges. Westminster City Council came top of the RAC league table with £80m parking income in 2011/12, followed by Kensington and Chelsea RLBC with £42.8m and Camden LBC with £39.3m. Camden's cabinet member for sustainability Cllr Phil Jones summed up feeling in the sector. He said: ‘Every penny of surplus is used to improve roads and make them safer for road users. ‘This isn't profit – every penny received is reinvested into road-related projects.' Chairman of the LGA's economy and transport board Cllr Peter Box said: ‘Any money left over goes towards transport services like filling potholes, concessionary travel, park and rides, street lights and road improvement projects. ‘Many councils have to subsidise parking services as the cost is not covered by charges.'
