Chelmsford BC has announced it is increasing its grants to voluntary groups by 33% in order to encourage prime minister David Cameron's vision of a ‘Big Society'.

The council's director of finance, Nick Eveleigh, said that despite a £1.4m cut in central government funding, the councillors had decided to increase the amount available to voluntary groups in 2011/12.
