Councils 'behind most data errors'

The Information Commissioner's Office has revealed local authorities are the country's biggest offenders for data breaches.

Local authorities are the country's biggest offenders when it comes to committing data breaches by releasing information in error, the Information Commissioner's Office has revealed.

Between March 2011 and February 2012, councils were responsible for 88 out of 281 self-reported incidents of human error, in the form of e-mails distributed mistakenly or documents sent to the wrong house, figures issued by the data watchdog under Freedom of Information rules showed.
