Counting care costs

Councils continue to face steep rises in the cost of care in both children and adult services. As social care chiefs gather this week for the National Children and Adult Services Conference, Ann McGauran speaks to sector experts to see what can be done to rein in rising fees.

The fanfare surrounding last week's local government finance policy statement heralded some welcome news for the sector's social care chiefs.

As they packed their bags for this week's National Children and Adult Services Conference in Bournemouth, they will have been pondering the likely impact of a long-awaited update to the Adult Social Care Relative Needs Formula.  The policy statement also confirmed the Spending Review allows for an increase of over £4bn of funding for adult social care in 2028-29 compared to 2025-26.
