Staff at Crawley DC have committed their creative talents to canvas in a bid to brighten up homeless hostels in the town. With the help of tenants, contractors and local businesses, they have produced more than 130 paintings of all shapes, sizes and styles. Tenants will now choose the works of art for the communal areas of each hostel. And the Sussex council plans to sell prints of the paintings to raise funds for trips to London’s Tate Modern or the National Gallery for hostel tenants. The council’s creative streak came after an Audit Commission inspection earlier this year labelled the borough’s 18 hostels ‘institutionalised’, rather than homely.
