English councils have until 18 May to apply for one of 12 local authority-led universal credit pilot projects, launched ahead of radical reforms to benefits which take effect from October 2013.

Operated by the LGA and Department for Work and Pensions, the trial schemes aim to help claimants get online support independently, and improve their money-management skills.
