Unemployment figures would soar to 6.3 million if US methods of measuring joblessness were used, the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has claimed.

Adapting Whitehall data to replicate the American ‘U6' standards, incorporating under-employed and marginally attached workers, the TUC found 1.9 million people in part-time or temporary jobs due to unavailability of permanent posts.
