Paul Woods on the need to create lasting and independent and lasting income steams for council cultural facilities

I sat through my 28th Newcastle Council budget meeting and was relieved when the budget was finally approved with over three hours of emotional debate, after the longest and hardest budget process I have experienced so far.

Member after member expressed their concern and sorrow at the services being cut as part of a £37m package of savings needed to deliver a balanced budget next year, knowing it was just the first part of an extremely challenging £100m three-year savings requirement.
