Government austerity measures are having a disproportionate impact on the economy of north-west England, Unison has claimed.
The local government union warned that while national unemployment levels had fallen slightly, according to recent figures, the North West had ‘sadly, bucked the trend, and suffered the biggest increase of any region of the UK'. Kevan Nelson, Unison's North West regional secretary, said: ‘An unemployment rate approaching 10% has very serious consequences in terms of social problems and wasted talent.'
