There has been a flurry of chief executive movements across the UK this week. There are now two Welsh chief executives named Byron Davies after Cardiff Council's chief executive Byron Davies was joined in Wales by former chief executive of Cornwall's Caradon DC, Byron Davies, who is to take up the role of chief executive of Conwy CBC in February. Caradon DC is to be abolished as part of the reforms that will see Cornwall run from Truro by a single, super-council. In Scotland, the former director of housing and social work at Aberdeenshire Council, Colin Mackenzie, has been made chief executive. He joined Grampian Regional Council in 1982 as a social work manager. In 1995, he was appointed as head of social work for Aberdeenshire Council, and in 2006, he was appointed director of housing and social work. Elsewhere, the chief executive of East Staffordshire BC has been suspended. A spokesperson from the council described Jeanette McGarry's suspension as a ‘neutral act', pending an investigation, but refused to reveal why and when she was suspended (see story below). She moved to the town hall in spring after previously working as corporate director of community services at Solihull MBC. And finally, Surrey CC chief executive, Richard Shaw, is to retire. Mr Shaw took up his current role in 2005, following four years as chief executive of Oxfordshire CC. Prior to that, he was Surrey CC's director for the environment. Commenting on his departure, he said: ‘I have loved my work and have learned enormously from that experience. ‘After 12 years in local government and eight years as a chief executive, this is the right time for me to step down.' He hopes to move into non-executive and consultancy roles.
