Delivery of housing can be turbo-charged

Cities and central government must work together to tackle the viability barriers to housing delivery, says Cllr John Merry.

The Labour Party Conference rightly placed housing at the heart of the national agenda. Announcements surrounding new towns and renewed efforts to meet the Government's ambitious target of 1.5 million homes reflect the urgency of the UK's housing crisis. But if the Government is serious about tackling Britain's housing crisis, words must translate into action and both government and local authorities must work in tandem to accelerate delivery.

When compared to other European cities, the UK  faces a 4.3 million housing shortfall that could take as long as 50 years to close if activity remains at its current level. The realities of this shortfall are stark for the Key Cities, whose network represents around a tenth of the UK's urban population outside of London.
