Is democracy in danger from election delays?

Repeated election postponements place councils in an invidious position and risk undermining democratic accountability and trust in local governance, says Jonathan Carr-West.

A year really is a long time in politics. Last February, Angela Rayner stood at the despatch box to announce the devolution priority programme (DPP) areas and confirmed that elections there would be postponed from May 2025 to May 2026. A lot has happened since then.

Local government has worked to every deadline set by Whitehall, but this has been against a background of constant chopping and changing from the centre.
