The Department for Education (DfE) has returned £58m of schools funding to councils, after 30 authorities threatened to seek a judicial review into how much cash was being deducted to expand the academies programme.

Government plans to top-slice funding from each local authority, regardless of how many Whitehall funded academies were formed in each area, proved contentious, and led the Local Government Association to launch a legal challenge last year.
