Devolving CTB in Wales 'will hit the poorest'

The Welsh Government has revealed 230,000 more households across Wales will pay council tax following the devolution of CTB.

Around 230,000 more households across Wales will pay council tax, following the devolution of council tax benefit (CTB) to local authorities from April 2013, the Welsh Government has revealed.

On 19 December, the Welsh Assembly will vote on allowing councils to provide means-tested council tax benefits following the devolution, which will also see central government funding for the benefit cut by 10%. Funding cuts will be passed on to around 330,000 households in Wales, making them £67 worse off a year on average. The Welsh Government claimed around 70% of these households would pay council tax for the first time.
