Basildon DC is hoping to turn waste from 1,100 local food outlets into compost or energy, to reduce landfill costs. Colin Stroud, from Basildon Green Business Forum (GBF), said currently, almost all food outlets were sending their food waste to landfill. ‘We envisage this waste from local businesses being turned into compost or, ideally, energy, and think this project could really put Basildon on the map,' he said. The project will initially see GBF work in partnership with 17 businesses and, if successful, it will be widened out across the council area.
