The Department for Education has published new school funding plans, designed to help local authorities with rural schools.
In the latest review of 2013-14 funding arrangements, the option of a new 'sparsity' factor could be used to identify schools in remote areas based on the average distance pupils have to travel to get there. Local authorities would be able to use this to establish a threshold and provide extra funding to any schools which have a travel distance above that limit.
