Whitehall needs a ‘different breed of manager' to tackle low morale in the tough economic climate, a renowned workplace psychologist told The MJ following the fourth annual civil service engagement survey.

Released on 1 February, the 2012 poll found staff engagement in the DCLG was virtually stagnant – rising just 3% from last year to an overall approval rating of 43%. It is now placed second from bottom across the 17 main Whitehall departments.
