Tory think-tank Direct Democracy has backed LGA calls for central government to be stripped of its powers to set council tax. But the LGA's desire to see an independent commission, dubbed Oftax, to take on the role, has been slammed as ‘bizarre'. The group said: ‘Does the LGA not trust its own members to judge their needs better than a distant group of unelected experts?'
