Director of Education & Employment, St. Helena Government

Three Year Fixed Term Contract (March 2012 onwards).

A self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom, St Helena is an island of 47 square miles and around 4,000 people in the South Atlantic. With Cape Town in South Africa some 1,700 miles distant, the Islanders enjoy a unique lifestyle in truly unspoilt, friendly and peaceful surroundings.

Education on St Helena is based broadly on the British system and the English and Welsh national curriculum. Compulsory schooling is for children aged between five and sixteen split into Primary and Secondary Education. Primary Education is currently delivered through three schools and Secondary Education via one Community High School. The Director of Education & Employment will be appointed to push forward a robust agenda of school improvement and modernisation.

The Role:

* Improve standards with regards to achievement at key stages of the students' education in conjunction with developing Teacher Training and Adult Vocational/Further Education to enrich the learning and development of the people of St Helena;
* Review, develop and implement the Education & Employment Strategic Plan providing staff development programmes for the senior management team to ensure schools continue to strengthen in the longer term;
* Monitoring and control of the Education budget ensuring strict budgetary control each financial year underlined by a productivity improvement programme to eliminate unnecessary processes.

The Person:

* A degree in an Education related discipline with the necessary background checks to work within Primary and Secondary Education, you will possess strong negotiating and influencing skills to help build stakeholder relations;
* Ability to work as part of a wider team whilst using persuasive interpersonal skills to promote the advancement of learning and development on the Island;
* Fluent in written and spoken English, you will have effective oral and written communication skills and be able to motivate and inspire colleagues and students alike.
