Director of Public Health - Gloucestershire County Council

Director of Public Health - Gloucestershire County Council

Salary: £86,679 - £95,881 per annum

Permanent, full time

About the role

We do things differently here at Gloucestershire County Council. We operate as a Commissioning Council with an innovative structure. Commissioning ensures that we are focusing our priorities on meeting the needs of our communities in a joined-up, collaborative way. It also affords you, as Director of Public Health, the opportunity to fully integrate public health with all Council functions, realise synergies and shape our public health ‘offer' to best serve the interests and needs of Gloucestershire.

You'll understand the link between economic success and good health. You'll help elected Members to develop a clear, long-term strategy that delivers maximum improvements in health and wellbeing for the population of Gloucestershire.

You'll lead for the Council and the wider health community on all public health matters.

It won't be easy changing the way we work, but you'll relish a challenge and will want to make your mark by improving outcomes. Where change is called for, you'll drive it, setting out your vision and inspiring our team, the wider Council and our external partners. Producing an independent annual report, you'll detail the health of the population, the progress on improving health and make future recommendations. As you would expect, collaboration is vital for your success, so you'll work closely with the Health and Wellbeing Board, internal and external partners, including the Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group, district and borough councils, Public Health England and the wider health economy.

You'll deliver in three key areas: Health Improvement, to reduce health inequalities and develop sustainable and cohesive communities with healthier lifestyles; Health Protection, including dealing with infectious disease threats; and, Population Healthcare, including supporting commissioning of effective healthcare locally and promoting coverage of screening and immunisation services.

Ultimately, you'll help create the best possible public health outcomes for us now and in the future. About you First and foremost, you're a transformational and visionary leader.

Confident and credible, you're an excellent communicator and will inspire the people you work with – from other commissioners to the wider Council and its external partners. You'll be politically aware and able to engage effectively with elected Members.

Self-motivated, proactive and innovative, you've exceptional change and project management skills, along with experience of managing budgets. You're likely to be in a similar role or looking to step up to a new challenge. Either way, it's important that you're a registered GMC, GDC or UKPHR public health specialist with significant experience in all areas of public health practice.
