Isle of Anglesey CC could be ‘contributing to the death of the Welsh language’, over its appointment of a new managing director, according to the Welsh language society. Cymdeithas Yr Iaith Gymraeg was reportedly ‘angered’ by a section in the English language version of the job advert. It states that for many posts within the authority, fluency in the Welsh language is regarded as essential, but encouraged non-Welsh speakers to apply for the post, adding a successful non-fluent candidate would be given support and encouragement to attain an ‘appropriate’ level of fluency. Cymdeithas spokesman, Dafydd Morgan Lewis, told the Daily Post: ‘It is disgraceful an authority such as Anglesey Council which serves an area where a high percentage of the population are Welsh-speaking does not carry out its business completely through the medium of Welsh.’ A council spokesman told The MJ the shortlist for the post was made up entirely of fluent Welsh speakers, but non-Welsh speaking candidates had applied. He added that interviews for the new managing director were to be held on 21 July.
