Writing beneath a cloud of volcanic ash, invisible, but enough to stop the planes flying from London's Heathrow Airport – enjoying the eerie silence but appreciating many of our residents and staff are marooned in far-flung parts of the globe – caused me to reflect on the power of unexpected events, both natural and man-made.
