Residents of Harlow, Essex, have doubled the amount of waste they recycle in two years, from 26% in 2009 to just under 52% in the last year.

The upturn, which sees the town recycling more waste than it landfills for the first time, follows the introduction of new bin collections making it easier for townsfolk to recycle at home. Over the last year, 9,000 tonnes of waste were recycled, and almost 4,000 tonnes of food waste and garden clippings were composted.
