Durham tightens HMO rules

Durham CC’s Reform administration has tightened Homes of Multiple Occupation (HMO) rules after its leader revealed they were looking at such measures to address asylum accommodation.

Durham CC's Reform administration has tightened Homes of Multiple Occupation (HMO) rules after its leader revealed they were looking at such measures to address asylum accommodation.

The council has approved an ‘Article 4 Direction' which means all new HMOs require planning approval. This strengthens the restrictions beyond national rules which allow houses to be converted into HMOs for between three and six residents without planning permission.
