More than 3,000 DVD retail and rental outlets, including HMV, Virgin and Blockbuster, and cinemas have written to their local councils urging them to put more resources into trading standards to tackle DVD piracy. Director general of the British Video Association, Lavinia Carey, said: βThe impact of piracy is far reaching. It causes the closure of shops, leading to a reduction in business rates payable, with a knock-on effect on the local economy.β
