Spending watchdogs have branded as ‘unacceptable' the Department for Work and Pensions' continued failure to prevent high levels of benefit fraud and error.

The National Audit Office recently qualified the DWP's annual accounts for the 24th year in succession, estimating it lost £3.2bn of overpayments due to fraud and error in 2011/12 – 2% out of the UK's £159bn welfare spend.
