Government departments have slashed the number of top earners by more than one-third over the past two years, Cabinet Office figures have revealed.

The number of civil servants paid more than the prime minister's £142,500 salary has been cut to 234 from 372 in May 2010, which is when ministers first ordered the disclosure of senior pay details.
