City council leader, Jenny Dawe, revealed that a meeting had been held after confirmation of the Lloyds TSB merger with HBOS. Edinburgh has become a major financial centre on the strength of it being the headquarters for banks such as RBS. She said: ‘I have stressed Edinburgh's strengths, and have strongly pressed for the retention of jobs, branches and HQ functions in the capital. ‘This council is determined to do all it possibly can to protect the city from the worst effects of the global financial crisis.'
