Whitehall should abandon its local road pricing initiative if no cities opt for new congestion charges this year, an influential think-tank has warned. The Centre for Cities said the UK should take a ‘use it or lose it' approach to congestion charging if major cities joined Manchester in rejecting proposed schemes. Instead, the Government should use £1bn set aside to finance the extension of charges to fund ‘more badly-needed public transport projects'.
