Communities secretary, Eric Pickles, has urged councils to ‘get tough on – and take on – the fraud cons' responsible for crimes costing local government an estimated £2.1bn a year.

At Mr Pickles' request, the Government's counter fraud task force has published a 10-point checklist to help councils crack down on fraud in housing tenancy, council tax, procurement and recruitment.
