Advertised salaries for local government chief executives have failed to keep up with inflation, an analysis has revealed.

Data gathered by The MJ from across all council types showed the average advertised salary rose from £157,480 in 2021 to £179,426 in 2025 – an increase of 14% or more than £22,000 in four years.
