EXCLUSIVE: ICB debt hits £570m

Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) owe English councils hundreds of millions of pounds, creating cash flow problems, risking delivery and straining key relationships.

Research by The MJ and its sister magazine Healthcare Management found the country's ICBs collectively owed local authorities at least £570m up to the end of the 2024-25 financial year – inevitably a snapshot of cashflows that does not consider local circumstances.

The £570m was confirmed by ICBs themselves after Freedom of Information Act requests, though some of the figures are contested.
