Health and Safety Executive officers have called on Gosport BC to recruit two binmen to pick up garden waste. The council's waste contractor, Verdant, approached health and safety officers after claiming it was too dangerous for one binman to pick up the bags β workers already refuse to pick up bags deemed too heavy. Now, officers have decided the cumulative weight of the sacks over one day is too great for one employee. Peter Chegwyn, chairman of the council's community and environment board, condemned the executive: βIt is health and safety gone mad,' he said. The council will consider the report next month.
