We all know the tragic story. But help is at hand. The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs recently launched a £25m Species Survival Fund (SSF) to create and restore natural habitats required to halt species decline. Councils can apply for cash. But Diary wonders, with local government still under threat following a near-extinction event (the global financial crash) and subsequent decline in once abundant habitats (revenue support grant), shouldn't the SSF also rescue bigger beasts such as metropolitanae auctoritati, conciliis rusticis and concilium comitatus? It would make for a great TV series, too: Frozen (Grant) Planet.
