Fair Funding: Have rural councils in England really lost out?

When it comes to spending power, urban councils will soar ahead of rural councils by 2028-29, according to LGA figures. But exclusive Institute for Fiscal Studies’ analysis has found funding will be broadly the same across rural and suburban areas. Gabriel Stewart reports.

When the Government announced the first multi-year local government finance settlement in more than a decade in February, members of the public could be forgiven for thinking it would be well-received.

But, for many rural councils, Fair Funding 2.0 was far from it. The reallocation of funding meant direct cuts to government grants and further reliance on raising council tax to make up the shortfall.
