Every school should be part of a local system of admissions to give a fairer choice of school places and tackle segregation, according to think-tank, the Institute for Public Policy Research (ippr). The ippr claims no school should administer its own admissions process, and there should be an independent admissions administrator in every local education authority. ippr director, Nick Pearce, said: ‘We need a system of fair choice for parents and pupils. At the moment, schools which control their own admission arrangements are selecting their pupils, and our classrooms are more socially segregated than the local communities outside the school gates.'
